The Case for Expanding and Enhancing

The Lillian Booth Actors’ Home

(our Nursing Home and Assisted Living Care Facility)

The Actors’ Fund of America, founded in 1882, is the national human services organization serving the entire entertainment community.  In fulfilling its commitment to helping industry members and their families, The Fund provides services that include affordable housing, health care for the uninsured, employment and training, social services and financial assistance.

The Fund also cares for 109 seniors at its Home – 42 in assisted living and 67 in skilled nursing.  Top-quality care is provided there in a beautiful six-acre setting in Englewood, New Jersey.  This care is enhanced through programs and services designed to address the unique needs of people who have lived and worked in entertainment.

The needs of this community are growing, and over the next ten years, the number of Americans between the ages of 75 and 84 will increase by 28%, and those over 84 by 42%. Already, applicants hoping to move into our skilled nursing home are too often asked to wait, or are referred someplace else, because there are not enough beds available to meet the demand.

It is critically important that The Actors’ Fund act now to meet this growing need.  For this reason, The Fund is proposing to launch a capital campaign to raise $4 million so that:

  • 22,500 square feet will be converted into more usable space

  • 15 beds will be added to the skilled nursing facility, increasing capacity from 67 to 82

  • Sub-acute care will be expanded, offering more residents IV therapies, wound care, pain management, and hospice

  • A state-of-the-art rehabilitation and activities wing will be created to provide physical, occupational and speech therapies

  • The lobby will be renovated to enhance security, improve reception services and promote access to management and care staff

What are the economic merits of this plan?

A nursing facility’s efficiency is largely dictated by size, and larger facilities are generally more efficient.  In 1988, The Actors’ Fund Homes started with 50 beds.  In 1996 it added 17 more beds.  Today, The Actors’ Fund Homes has the opportunity to add 15 more beds.  This proposed plan not only addresses the growing needs of seniors, but also adds to the Homes’ operating efficiency.  With this $4 million expansion, The Actors’ Fund Homes could achieve financial stability where revenues exceed expenses.  The investment will improve the bottom line by an average of $200,000 annually.

How much will it cost?

 15 Bed Expansion

$2,888,382

 Rehab Wing

$418,025

 Assisted Living

$293,593

 DV, Admin., related expenses

$400,000

 Total

$4,000,000

What is the Financial Outlook of the Expansion on Total Homes Operations?

Since 2001, The Fund has increased government support and gained operating efficiency, narrowing the amount of subsidy need to operate the Home.  By adding 15 beds, revenues can exceed operating expenses beginning by 2006.
