NEXT HOUSING SEMINAR CLICK HERE Supportive housing is frequently a critical need for
members of the entertainment community, particularly those who are elderly, disabled or
HIV-positive. In the early 1990s, The Actors' Fund Board and management took a fresh look
at the agency's provision of shelter. In practical terms, The Fund was already in the
"bricks and mortar" business of supportive housing. Rent subsidies consumed
about half of all the nonprofit agency's financial assistance budget. Members of the
entertainment profession were hit especially hard by the AIDS crisis, creating an
ever-increasing need for services and housing. In addition, The Actors' Fund gained
expertise in supportive housing through its ownership and operation of The Lillian Booth Actors' Home of the Actors' Fund of America
in Englewood, New Jersey, representing a century of
service. Supportive housing in New York City and Los Angeles became top priority
initiatives and suited The Fund's long-term strategic plans.
